Founder Bak Kut Teh

Haven't posted anything since I started work. But hopefully we'll get our momentum back again =)

What a better way to start again with FOOD!!! haha Over the past months, been able to try more yummy stuff here. Let me begin with...

Founder Bak kut Teh
37 Balestier Road

Bak Kut Teh is one of Singapore's signature dishes. It's basically pork ribs soup. And Founder is one of the most visited place to get this soup.

The place is covered with photos of famous people who went there for their Bak Kut Teh. I honestly don't know anyone from the photos, but I guess they're popular here.

The owner, is the man sitting wearing a green polo. He's always there apparently, still overlooking the operations of the restaurant. AND all the photos in wall, are photos of him with the popular folks.

Back to the food. When you order Bak Kut Teh, it will come with Youtiao, the fried bread. But I of course need my rice!! And some veggies.

Here's the Bak Kut Teh in close up. My ribs unfortunately was not that tender - SAD!!! Saw this place get featured in AFC and when the host was eating his ribs, the meat was falling off the bones. So too bad for me I got the blah ones. The soup is quite good. Simple, I think it's just garlic and pepper. But you'll really feel the warm kind of heat when you eat this. It's not that kind of spicy that burns your tongue. But you'll get heat down your throat, a little tamer than what you'll get from tequila. Haha

Overall, I was not that happy. I mean it's meat and bones in a soup. But I guess some people enjoy that kind of simplicity. This will cost around 10sgd I think.

Theme Park

Hello Universal Studios!

This was a random-impulse-sporadic trip to universal! We went straight to the roller coasters since we both are fans of thrill rides! But before we can ride the coaster we have to deposit our things in their high-tech locker system!
not your average locker
see why..
step one to step 4
We rode both the coasters 3 times...each! We love the blue one since it was the scarier one but after 3 times it was no big deal for us anymore!

hello coasters
We had hotdogs for lunch.. not happy with mine!
$11.50 each
Went to one of the biggest candy shop i saw.. and cam-whored
we love candies and chocolates
also went to the pseudo new york city
yaya 1 and yaya 2

Went to kingdom far far away as well..

Found this signage uber cute :)
Chili's
6 flags wait for us!!

Papa Palheta

I love magazines back in manila i make it a point to buy Preview magazines (though in the latter part of the previous year the issues are getting worse but i think they already reformatted the mag thank god) anyway since preview is not available Her World is my alternative.. its is priced at $6 and I really get the value for my money! Yay!!
March 2011 issue
Anyway, on the Lifestyle Food section they were talking about the best places for coffee here in SG. So we decided to try one (since it was also recommended by Marie)

according to the magazine:
There are no price tags here as this hole-in-the-wall cafe lets you tip as you wish.. (suggested that $3.50 per cup)

So Honestly is the best policy! It is a place to buy your coffee beans not really a cafe :)
Had a hard time finding this huhu stress!! but i guess it was worth it..
path to Papa Palheta
entrance
ok went inside and ordered a Cappuccino and Marie ordered a Latte on the top of our head since there was no menu (hmmm...not bad coffee)
Coffee photo
We went inside and saw a lot of cool stuff like..
A more Jurassic Apple vs my Jurassic Apple
more Jurassic stuff
What hell are these?
went to their coffee tasting session (other day) and realized that these are tasting spoons!
tasting spoons
Papa Palheta is found ar 140 Bukit Timah opens from 9am-730pm Tuesday- Friday,Sunday and 9am-9pm on Saturdays. They are closed on Mondays for coffee roasting.

They have another real cafe Loysel's Toy at 66 Kampong Bugis (they have actually food, drinks and menu)

Weee for Wee Nam Kee

Heard they serve the best chicken rice according to some people. So Ilene and I decided to visit the place one day!

If you're expecting an air conditioned restaurant with table cloths, you won't find that here in Thompson Road.

The view. Tables and chairs along the street, and the inside looks like a normal food eatery in Chinatown in the Philippines.

View from across the street. As you can see, it's already packed with people. And it's not even lunch time yet!

Roasted or Steamed???? Ilene and I ordered a set with both =)

The sauce / condiments selection!!! LOVE IT!!!

Ilene got her favorite chili ginger sauce!!! (Although for her it lacked ginger a bit)

And I got my PLAIN old ginger! Usually stalls selling roasted chicken etc don't serve this...happy!!!!

Ilene - Left, Marie - Right

By the way, this was our view, the garbage bin where they throw away left overs. See the crow getting one of the pieces? Haha

Free soup is also served. If you are familiar with the soup from Masuki, it tastes kind of like that.

Finally our order came!!!! Roasted and Steamed Chicken combi for 8sgd!

We each got a cup of rice (the rice is so fluffy and fragrant! Yum!) 0.50sgd for each.

I don't know if you see it clearly BUT the chicken meat is really thick, unlike the others who give you small portions.

Ilene also ordered the Barley drink (1.5sgd). Not my favorite, but she enjoyed it. Tastes like the Am from rice. Cleanses your palette I guess, after eating the food.

As you can see we are almost done eating but I just wanted to show you the meat! Usually the steamed one has no flavor, but Wee Nam Kee's is soooooo tasty and juicy! Actually, you won't really need the condiments with it because the chicken is already flavorful enough!

THE CHICKEN WAS AWESOME. Not yet sure if this is the best. But what I'm sure of is that we will visit this place again soon. Blogging about it wants me to go there right now haha

Things To Chow Down: Part 3

Again, we can't help ourselves. There's just so many food! Although sometimes it gets nauseating to eat some food over and over and over again, there are some that hit the right spot!

Burger Bench & Bar | Cathay Cineleisure Orchard

I ordered the Cheeseburger with Sundreied Tomato Relish. (7.80sgd) The burger patty was thick and juicy and the flavors are quite tasty!

High Society | Marina Sands

High Society is a fine dining restaurant serving up quality food paired up with wines, champagnes and cocktails. Aside from this, they also offer cupcakes and desserts!

After lunch, Ilene and I needed to satisfy that sweet craving. FYI Ilene doesn't like cold desserts that much i.e. Ice Cream so we ended up here!

Ilene ordered the Apple Caramel Cupcake. Check out that face. She wasn't that happy 'cause the cupcake was small and costs 6sgd. But I found the caramel popcorn topping cute!

I on the other hand was very happy with my order. For those who know me well enough, I can't live without sweets! After checking out the cupcake offerings, I felt I needed that Tiramisu fix! It's made with mascarpone cheese which made it very fluffy and light! Plus, there's a rice crispy coated with chocolate topping that gave the soft dessert that contrasting texture it needed! Yummy, but it's quite expensive - 8sgd!

Hairloom & Caramel - Salon, Cafe, Home | Beach Road

Hairloom & Caramel is a very unique shop. It's a salon and cafe in one. Ilene and I visited this place for the first time yesterday after passing by the shop weeks ago. Since we just wanted to sit back and relax, we came to the right place! We also stayed there for more than 2 hours!

The Ambiance:

Best example on how to achieve the perfect mismatched furnitures!

Their logo in a frame! Cute!
Calendar Pillows!

The textile of my wonderful UP chair. =)

Me + Up chair + Coffee table book

Ilene and her chair - which is too short to provide optimum back support. haha

The Food:

Iced coffee (4.5) for Ilene! With unique stirrer too!

I got the Flat White (Espresso with Milk) for 3.5sgd. Had to add my sugar, of course. That clear bottle is their sugar container - which looked dubious for Ilene haha

And I gotta have my cupcake! Ordered the Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip (3.5sgd)

Astons Express

Ilene and I have no clue which branch this is. But we know it's near La Salle School of the Arts. But we also tried their branch in Paya Lebar which we believe is better - bigger stall and cleaner! We were so hungry after walking around Bugis and getting lost. So when we saw this, we immediately decided to have dinner here. Afterall, we enjoyed their burgers the last time we visited.

Their burger menu. My 2nd time to order the Beefy Jack Burger.

Condiments. Obviously Chili Sauce won over the Ketchup. Eew.

Ilene got Grilled Fish with Herbs + 2 side dishes (Mashed potatoes and Onion Rings). This is very worth it for 6.5sgd.

As mentioned earlier, I got the Beefy Jack Burger 5.5sgd). This time in medium so it's a bit pinkish. Not so yummy when I tried it the 2nd time because the bun was still frozen on the sides. Yuck. We suggest you visit the Paya Lebar branch for a better experience.
